Everyday Heroes : Raymond Anthony Fernando The story of Raymond and Doris

Channel 5 of Singapore TV shows the touching story of a man's journey and love for his wife who suffers from schizophrenia. Raymond is married to Doris and cared for her for 37 years through her struggles with Schizophrenia.

Like Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia is another mental illness that is a real medical condition which can be treated.

Everyday Heroes : Raymond and Doris

Raymond and Doris tells their story

Raymond and Doris met through being penpals and they got married. He told her "if schizophrenia is part of your life, then it will be part of mine too."

Raymond took care of Doris. He does all the household works and prepare medicine for her. Doris shared that she could manage schizophrenia with Raymond's help.

Raymond became an advocate for mental illness. He is a volunteer at Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Singapore, educating others about mental illness and how caregivers can take care of their loved ones who has a mental illness.

Raymond and Doris has a website : Ray of Hope - www.rayofhope.per.sg

The desire to help people with mental illness and their caregivers is what inspired me to start this blog and share my story of my life with bipolar disorder. May this blog be a blessing to all readers too.

Hi Nancie,

Chanced upon your blog, while trying to cope w my partner's depression. It is getting alil difficult to cope at times, when she gets overly critical and becomes very opinionated abt everything that I say / do. Thanks for all your sharing. I'm really hoping she will go counseling w me, since counseling in Asia is the next closest thing to therapy. I am not keen on the option for psychiatric treatment, especially on the prescription of medicine. Shrugs. We'll see what God will lead us to. Keep well, and know the Lord makes all things possble always. Amen :-)

Hi G,

Thanks for stopping by and your kind note!

I can understand how difficult it is to live with someone with mood disorder. Hope she will go for counselling and find the help she needs.

For me the medicine helps to balance the chemical in my brain and helps me to function. So I accept it as a mercy from God. I think of my condition like diabetes, and how insulin help a diabetic to cope.

Sometimes different things work for different people. Praying with you that God will guide you and her to find the right help. Indeed, the Lord makes all things possible. Amen!

Take care.

Warm regards,
Nancie
