If you’re someone who enjoys face-to-face conversation, you can also schedule a video session with your therapist. Just go to at your visit time and your counselor will trigger you to begin the video chat.

Anyway, as it occurs, I am a little tweaked in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve struggled with higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I have actually mostly pertained to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I definitely would not mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does help. However could e-counselling not just re-hinge my mind, but do so without me needing to put trousers on and leave the house?

And drawing back from my own (relatively low-key) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health concerns intensifying among under-30s? With cuts to mental health services really beginning to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who already filter nearly every element of their lives– buddies, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is completely persuaded that shifting psychological health care online is the method forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you satisfy someone in person, in the same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not only what it resembles to speak with the person, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not produce the closeness, the intimacy, that actually gets individuals to open and explore things.”

” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s truly crucial that individuals who engage in it are aware that it’s a various experience from remaining in the room with somebody, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of accessibility, it’s a good start and absolutely much better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually showing up in the space.

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programmes instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s happening increasingly more for economic reasons, rather than due to the fact that it’s what’s best for individuals. If it’s rolled out just to conserve money and there aren’t important questions being asked about these services, that’s bad. But then, I’m always really sceptical of individuals who are either very really professional or very really versus online mental healthcare. It’s a case of asking the right questions.”

I signed up for four very different online psychological health services– ranging in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, concurrently, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Betterhelp App Mac

What I’m doing here is examining my experience of using each psychological health service, instead of its effectiveness – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in just one week. I’m simply comparing each service to the experience of being in a space and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyway), United States company is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of three years of experience.

After completing a questionnaire to establish what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on until among you eventually died.

What does it cost?

You get a complimentary seven-day trial – similar to a complimentary Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more questions about what your childhood resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for endless message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, but whatever.

How much is BetterHelp monthly?

Filtering that through instant messaging might be valuable if you find the concept of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You won’t get the very same connection as with face-to-face counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it easier to open up if you’ve been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.

She initially ascertained the scale of my stress and anxiety, what activates it– social situations, meeting individuals for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious youth (separated moms and dads, strained familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, but then that’s her job, isn’t it?

Overall, the service is remarkably slick. The discussion can be a little stop-starty at times, but it was really a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got fast reactions to messages over the weekend, which was unforeseen.

Talkspace vs Betterhelp

The fact you can modify messages prior to sending them suggests you’re not likely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the minute. Profound minutes of realisation might be tough to come by if you can’t get a relaxed flow going.

Who do I believe it might it be good for?

Anyone with a low-end mental health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in an extremely internet-y, 2016-y method. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud you can possibly imagine and require major attention (and possibly some meds), probably isn’t for you Betterhelp App Mac
