From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I have actually mostly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I definitely would not mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does assist.
And pulling back from my own (fairly low-key) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health problems escalating amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services truly beginning to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who already filter nearly every aspect of their lives– buddies, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.
Not everyone is completely persuaded that moving mental health care online is the way forward. “You get to know not only what it’s like to talk to the person, however how it feels to be in a space with them.
” I’ve carried out some research study into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s truly important that individuals who take part in it are aware that it’s a different experience from remaining in the space with someone, speaking in person.”
” In terms of accessibility, it’s a great start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to ultimately showing up in the space. However, if you’re dealing with relationship problems, accessory problems, or deeper problems, it’s better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the internet provides a distance from your counsellor that may not be useful.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.
If it’s rolled out just to save cash and there aren’t important concerns being asked about these services, that’s not excellent. Then, I’m always really sceptical of people who are either extremely really pro or really very against online mental health care.
I signed up for four very different online mental health services– varying in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, simultaneously, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.
Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Jungian Psychologist Better Help
What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of using each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in simply one week. I’m just comparing each service to the experience of being in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!
How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyway), United States company is the business leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.
After filling in a questionnaire to ascertain what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an immediate messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue until among you eventually died.
What does it cost?
You get a totally free seven-day trial – much like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more questions about what your youth resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for endless message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s complimentary either, however whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
If you discover the concept of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks, filtering that through immediate messaging might be practical. You won’t get the same connection as with face-to-face counselling, however the semi-anonymity might make it easier to open if you have actually been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s wedding dress every night.
She first ascertained the scale of my anxiety, what triggers it– social circumstances, satisfying individuals for the very first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (separated parents, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, but then that’s her task, isn’t it?
Overall, the service is impressively slick. The discussion can be a little stop-starty sometimes, however it was really a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got rapid reactions to messages over the weekend, which was unexpected.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The truth you can modify messages prior to sending them means you’re not likely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the minute. Extensive moments of realisation may be tough to come by if you can’t get an unwinded circulation going.
Who do I think it might it benefit?
Anyone with a low-end mental health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud you can possibly imagine and need major attention (and perhaps some medications), probably isn’t for you Jungian Psychologist Better Help
